Frank Muller
 Frank Muller

Frank Muller earned critical acclaim as a superstar of audio. His narration of Pat Conroy’s Beach Music won an Audie Award. His performance of Jack London’s brawny, masculine classic The Call of the Wild gained the attention of listeners and reviewers alike, placing him at the pinnacle of the audiobook industry.

Conroy and audiobook listeners across the country love Muller’s narrating style. “Muller’s rendition of The Prince of Tides,” one listener wrote, “allowed me not only to hear with my ears, but also to feel with my heart.” Kliatt’s review of The Call of the Wild echoes that listener’s sentiment: “Actor Muller reads with expression and variety that match the varying moods, feelings, and attitudes of all the characters, dog included, and that lend plausibility to almost unbelievable events.”

It was his ability to bring great literature to life that made him the natural choice to narrate The Old Man and the Sea, A Christmas Carol, and other classics. Muller’s masterful interpretation enhanced the majesty of these texts and his narrative voice delivered power and insight beyond the printed word.

Muller, who Library Journal called “the first true superstar of spoken audio,” narrated over 12 dozen titles for Recorded Books. In addition to classics, look for his performances on works by horror master Steven King, gripping thrillers by John le Carré, the mesmerizing vampire chronicles of Anne Rice, the quirky suspenses of Elmore Leonard, and even some comedies.

On November 5th, 2001, Frank Muller was in a very serious motorcycle accident near Los Angeles, California. John Grisham and other authors held a benefit on his behalf in New York on February 2nd, 2002. On June 4, 2008, Frank succumbed to injuries suffered in the accident, leaving behind a legacy of fine audiobook performances to be cherished by listeners young and old.

Average Narrator Rating: 4.74 (See Reviews Below.)
Here are some of the things others have said about Frank Muller and the books narrated by Frank Muller :
“All-star reader Frank Muller effortlessly slips from the French strains of Bogus’ fussy Parisian urologist to the guttural Germanic tones of angry Austrian skiers.”

fiveStar.jpg The Best of the Best...
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Green Mile)
In recent years, I have tended to shy away from Stephen King because of the excessive gore and violence that are often a part of his work. As a result, I had forgotten what a truly remarkable story teller he is.

The Green Mile is not a horror story. It is a tale of transformation and miracles... one that will make you laugh out loud and then break your heart. The characters have depth and power and I found myself reflecting on them, long after the tapes had finished.

While I can always count on Frank Muller for excellence in reading, I believe that this is one of his finest efforts to date. The story comes alive through his voice and you will find yourself completely immersed in the listening experience he creates. - Reviewer from Atlanta, Georgia (USA)

fiveStar.jpg The first book on tape I decided to buy instead of rent.
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Trustee from the Toolroom)
There are some books I read and recognize as good writing or insightfull, or the plot is compelling. Occasionally I find a book that, for very personal reasons, gives me a sense of pleasure and excitement about the story and characters such that listening/ reading it becomes a kind of rejoicing. This book gave me that sense of pleasure. Partially because Frank Muller seems to switch so effortlessly from British, to Scottish to American English. I marveled at how he differentiated the characters.
But I have to warn anyone reading this review that mine is a very personal reaction to the book. I like machinery and mechanical things, lathes and milling machines. A reader not interested in them might not find Keith Stewart such a compelling figure. He is middle aged, humble and interested in his own quiet pursuits. If you don’t believe in the adage - Reviewer from Palo Alto, CA

fiveStar.jpg History, suspense, ambience
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Stallion Gate)
Of the hundreds of Recorded Books I’ve listened to, this may be my favorite. The setting of this novel (by Martin Cruz Smith) is the New Mexico development site of the atomic bomb. This story is a fictionalized drama based on characters and events surrounding the development of the bomb and protection of its secrets from hostile foreign intelligence services. Stallion Gate creates the perfect blend of South Western ambiance, intrigue, and historical portent. Most compelling is the weaving of diverse characters, (including a Pueblo Indian protagonist, Oppenheimer and other scientists working on the Trinity bomb development project, and military security types concerned with espionage) into a rich and believable fabric. Character development is nuanced and superb. The listener can feel several characters moving inexorably toward their destinies as the story unfolds. The story reaches an unforgettable climax that echoes still in my mind. The timeliness and historical context of this book give it a unique power.

Frank Muller’s reading of Stallion Gate is one of his finest performances. He reads with exquisite poise, inflection, and restraint, and brings to life a captivating group of characters. Muller captures perfectly a mood that is a blend of suspense and foreboding in an appealing setting that mixes Native American cultural themes with the high drama of a critical, historical weapons development project. - Reviewer from Ellicott City, MD

fiveStar.jpg One of the Best I've heard
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Tale of the Body Thief)
I’ve listened to this book 22 times. Each time I get so much more out of it. I only wish Recorded Books would also publish the more recent books by Anne Rice - Reviewer from Connecticut, USA

fiveStar.jpg Incomparable Mystery
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Hart’s War)
The author has written a wonderful murder mystery with a twist. He has set it in a POW camp in World War II. It is both historically accurate and wonderfully inventive at the same time. The narrator, Frank Muller, is up to his usual high standards, giving this book a tone you might not appreciate by just reading it. - Reviewer from Florida

fiveStar.jpg My favorite book, and I've never read it!!!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Old Man and the Sea)
After listening to this recorded book years ago, and many times since, I’ve grown to love it. Hemingway’s descriptions are wonderful and Muller’s narration is superb. This is one I’ll have to purchase on CD! - Reviewer from

fiveStar.jpg Totally enthralling -- both story and narrator!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Interview with the Vampire)
Within the first few minutes of listening to “Interview with the Vampire,” I became totally enthralled, not only with the fascinating story, but also with the exceptional narration! Even as the tape began, Frank Muller’s unique skill was obvious, evoking vivid mental images through inflection, intonation, and individualized voices for the characters. And I was captivated with the almost poetic way in which Anne Rice’s words created the intriguing world of vampires. I am delighted that Recorded Books, Inc. chose Frank Muller to also narrate the second, third, and fourth books of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. I don’t think any other narrator could better present Anne Rice’s compelling and complicated characters, especially Lestat! Thank you for the many, many hours of fascinating listening! - Reviewer from Phila., PA

fiveStar.jpg Engaging--a roller coaster ride!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating A Tale of Two Cities)
Tale of Two Cities was one of those books I always thought I - Reviewer from USA

fiveStar.jpg A masterly reading of a masterpiece
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Hunt for Red October)
Hunt For Red October is the most satisfying of the incarnations of this early Tom Clancy thriller. Clancy establishes Jack Ryan as a major character with a future in many novels. The narration, multi-voce, in texture makes the story like a campfire thriller. Did a Russian sub captain really defect with a super silent nuclear sub and defect with it to the US? Who knows for sure - this work is that beleivable. If you have seen the movie or read the book - this is still worth the time. - Reviewer from Upstate NY

fiveStar.jpg This book has a little of everything!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Chains of Command)
Frank Muller is a truly spectacular narrator! He does a great job of portraying all the characters. The book has mystery, action and romance all in one. You won’t lose interest in the plot! - Reviewer from Phila, PA

fiveStar.jpg The narrator and plot are outstanding!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Dirt)
Frank Muller does a super job of narrating this book. The characters are all portrayed so well and the plot really holds interest! I couldn’t wait to get back in my car to listen to this book! - Reviewer from Philadelphia, PA

fiveStar.jpg A Tale of Two Cities
(Review of Frank Muller narrating A Tale of Two Cities)
A Tale of Two Cities... It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... I’ve heard these words so many times, but now they mean so much more. I was amazed not only with Dickens’ ability to tell the story, but also with Frank Muller’s ability to take the reader right into the middle of the story. Muller need not tell us which character was speaking, we could easily distinguish that by his marvelous voices.
While we are living in an era of instant gradification, I thouroughly enjoyed the discriptive narrative and stong character descriptions and development. I feel as though I know each of the characters in the novel and would recognize them if I passed them on the street!
A wonderful novel and a masterful presentation. - Reviewer from Godfrey, IL

fiveStar.jpg Great Story!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Horse Whisperer)
This is a great story and a great performance! - Reviewer from NH

fourStar.jpg Tale of suspense that will change your outlook on life forever
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Green Mile)
In a state prison during the late 1930’s a man comes to the E-Cell block and changes the prisonkeepers lives forever by showing them the truth of an unforgivable crime. This wonderfully composed bestselling tale has left much of the world in tears as they reveal for themselves the hatred of the true world. - Reviewer from Arlington Texas

fourStar.jpg Loved the story but had a hard time listening to a different narrator
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Mark)
I continue to be fascinated by the series. I have listened to all the books. This was the first book narrated by Frank Muller. He does an excellent job, but it is a little frustrating to listen to after hearing Richard Ferrone read the other books. They pronounce names differently, use different accents for the characters and Frank reads extremely fast.

I would definitely recommend listening to this book. Just be aware that the reading is totally different from the previous books. - Reviewer from Los Angeles

fiveStar.jpg Moby Dick is *not* boring!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Moby Dick)
When a friend loaned me his tapes of Moby Dick for my long 5 hour each way drives between Rochester NY and Ottawa, I thought he was nuts. - Reviewer from Rochester, NY

threeStar.jpg A sobering look at the future
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Mark)
Overall a frightening tale of the twisted hypocracy of a government and religion that mandates, on pain of death, people take a mark as a sign of loyalty and tolerance.
Frank Muller takes some getting used to after the outstanding job that Richard Ferrone did previously in the series. He has an annoying habit of lilting upward in tone at the end of many sentences, even ones where the mood is grave.
Some of the new characters introduced are very entertaining and while I think Richard Ferrone did a better job, Frank Muller does an excellent job of bringing the character Hickman to life. - Reviewer from Maryland

fiveStar.jpg Perhaps the best audiobook experience you can have!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption)
This is a remarkable story in print. Read by Frank Muller it takes on an unearthly quality. I believe this is not only one of King’s best works, but perhaps (with the possible exception of Pat Conroy’s - Reviewer from

threeStar.jpg Difficult Transition
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Mark)
The book continues the breathtaking saga - a real stay up all night to complete gem. I found the switch in readers extremely difficult; change in some character name pronunciation from previous volumes disconcerting. Book is same length as others - recording 2 CDs shorter - read much, much faster than #1-#7. While the reader’s earnest effort to give every character a different voice timbre and accent displayed an amazing talent, I found it distracting in this particular series, as there are so many characters. - Reviewer from Vermont

fourStar.jpg A Solid Performance, Not Outstanding. Story a bit Dull.
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption)
Story starts rambling from the beginning, and continues - it never grabbed me. But Muller narration makes it oK. - Reviewer from USA

fiveStar.jpg Exceptional in Every Way. A Must Read
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Silence of the Lambs)
You know the story, you’ve seen the movie, now listen to the best recorded book available. Totalling capitivating, engrossing. - Reviewer from USA

threeStar.jpg Not as good as the first 7 but still amazing
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Mark)
I have listened to all 8 so far in the series. They are fantastically done. Was disappointed in the narration of this one as I liked the narrater in the first 7. But he is good. Sometimes because of him using an authentic accent for the different people, you may have trouble understanding. But he is good. The story though, has you spellbound. Am anxious to be able to purchase the 9th book when I can afford it and then donate it to our public library. - Reviewer from Michigan

fiveStar.jpg The finest novel is read brilliantly by another genius
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Moby Dick)
Frank Muller’s reading is nothing short of genius itself. When you join Melville’s incredible genius with Muller’s talent, it is an experience not to be missed! This is not only the greatest American novel, I think it is THE greatest novel. After Melville there is nothing left to be said. If Hemingway says American Lit starts with Huck Finn, I defy him, and say it ended with Moby Dick. - Reviewer from Winter Park, Florida

fiveStar.jpg Finished This One In Less Than One Day
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Trustee from the Toolroom)
I only rented this oddly named story because I
enjoy Frank Muller so much. It turned ut to be one
of the best stories I have heard in a very long time.
This story about a reclusive, talented, decent man
who is forced by a family tragedy to pursue an
adventure far beyond his wildest expectations was
well worth the purchase. The story is well paced
and has such a quality of reality that one has to
wonder if there really was such a man. And if you
enjoy Frank Muller’s readings of American books,
you’ve just got to try his Bristish readings. - Reviewer from Bakersfield, California

fiveStar.jpg The Fab Four!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Chinaman’s Chance)
Ross Thomas read by Frank Muller is unforgettable. The dialogue leaps off the page and the descriptions of our two con artists are artistry themselves. Wu and Durant are the two most loveable con men ever. And Otherguy Overby? Well, read it and find out. - Reviewer from Maitland, Florida

fiveStar.jpg Moving, both in prose and performance
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Prince of Tides)
One of the most moving and memorable pieces of literature in the American genre. One could tell the reader was living the words as well as performing them. I have listened to this work several times and get something new from it with each listening. - Reviewer from Maryland

fiveStar.jpg Horrors of War
(Review of Frank Muller narrating All Quiet on the Western Front)
No heros or villians here, only stark and unyielding details of the horror of war and resulting closeness of the relationships between soldiers. This offering also brings into extreme focus the simple fact that soldiers, in the end, do not fight for country or cause but instead, out of a feeling of responsibiliy and kinship to their comrades. - Reviewer from Glenview, Illinois

fiveStar.jpg Fantastic Book - Everyone Should Read!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating All Quiet on the Western Front)
This was a very moving book that describes the horrors of war in and "up close and personal" manner. The randomness of death reminded me of some scenes from "Saving Private Ryan". While Im not a pacifist, this book would do well to temper the glorification of war that takes place in many societies. The ending is especially poignant. Has been one of my favorite reads of the last year. - Reviewer from Fremont, Nebraska

fiveStar.jpg Truly Outstanding!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Motherless Brooklyn)
If not the best audiobook Ive heard (and Ive logged a whopping slew of hours listening), this one would be in the top two or three of all time. On the one hand, the narrator does such a great job I was hoping he got paid a bonus for it; on the other hand, he sounds like hes having a blast doing it. The plot is not whiz-bang swell; it doesnt need to be. The book is character and setting-driven; its billed as a "mystery," although thats truly peripheral to the unfolding. Its Lionels keen observations were following, not the clues (as such). That having been said, this book has the opposite of most: usually the middle "sags" and the beginning and/or ending are brilliant. Here, I found it a bit slow going until we get past Lionels background and back to the present and the story picks up steam. The ending is kinda rushed, but thats OK because by then I was ready to call it quits without a lot of followup. It left me wondering what a sequel would be like. - Reviewer from Seattle, WA

fiveStar.jpg The Perfect Read
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Moby Dick)
It has been a decade or so since I read (listened to) Moby Dick with Frank Mullers narration. I remember it today as an experience as rich as hearing Stravinskys Firebird live or walking through a great Egyptian temple. To those people who would ordinarily dismiss audio books as less genuine that reading with ones eyes, I respond that literature was primarily an oral tradition. The great Recorded Books readers, especially Frank Muller, create a new artistic genre that is neither performance nor interpretation, yet is nonetheless breathtaking. - Reviewer from

fiveStar.jpg Much more enjoyable than the movie!!!
(Review of Frank Muller narrating The Horse Whisperer)
This story came alive for me under the skillful reading of the narrator. . . Ive seen the movie and found myself wishing I had not because it made me want to picture the characters as the actors they were depicted by in the movie. The descriptions given of them though, gave them much more dimension and I would have pictured them entirely differently. Folks, if youve seen the movie and liked it. . . the book is even better! And the original ending, while taking me by surprise, is not to be missed. - Reviewer from Southern California

fiveStar.jpg A must listen for everyone
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Moby Dick)
I read Moby Dick while in high school. I remember it as being forced on me by my English teacher, Mrs. Little and I liked it, but wasn’t impressed by it. Today I finished listening to Frank Mueller’s reading of it and I can’t say enough to give this wonderful story its due. Mr. Mueller is a genius at reading out-loud. He made it so I could almost smell the saltwater spray the whale’s great flukes splashed onto the sailors in their little rowboats. Mr. Mueller’s voices and speech rhythms were pitch perfect. If you only rent one book, make sure this is the one. - Reviewer from USA

This is one of the best books I have listened to. You find yourself in Rome, South Carolina and Poland. A true southern classic!!!!! - Reviewer from East Tennessee

fiveStar.jpg A true heros story that you can listen to time and time again
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Trustee from the Toolroom)
This is my second favorite recorded book. I feel that listening again and again to a good audio book can be just as satisfying as rewatching a favorite movie. I have listened to this book at least 15 times and Frank Muller just gets better. I have come to know each character and they are like old friends. My favorite book is still Pastoral which I have, believe it or not, listened to no less than 25 times. Once every three months is a necessity to stay in love with Gervais. My wife thinks I am a nut, but Shute and Muller is hard to beat!! - Reviewer from Virginia

fiveStar.jpg Excellent book.
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Coldheart Canyon)
Absolutely love listening to Frank Muller. Best narrator ever! - Reviewer from

fiveStar.jpg Great
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Chains of Command)
This is one of the greatest books I have ever listened to. The narrator takes on the verbage of each player smooth and precise. I have listened over and over again without getting tired of the book. Absolutely fantastic!! - Reviewer from Atlanta, GA

fiveStar.jpg It is Charles Dicken - It is a Classic - So you Must
(Review of Frank Muller narrating Great Expectations)
The plot doesnt pick up pace until around the chapter number 40, but the whole end of the book ties to the beggining so make sure to listen very careful to the first 40 chapters even if at times they bother you to death. The personal conflicts and wishes of one during 1800s is not much different from ours today. It is worth it! - Reviewer from Maine - USA
