Barbara Rosenblat
Barbara Rosenblat is one of the most popular and sought-after narrators of unabridged audio books in the country. Her deft handling of an amazing variety of dialects and characterizations continues to delight listeners and reviewers alike. The industry watchdog publication Audiofile says, “Rosenblat makes all the personalities as distinct as the sexual identities. Her equanimity encourages enjoyment of the characters, flaws and all.”
Ms. Rosenblat’s career spans two continents. She spent many years in England working in West End Theatre, television, film and BBC radio. Her return to the United States marked the start of her alliance with Recorded Books. Her body of work ranges from classics to romance and popular fiction.
Ms. Rosenblat has put her unique stamp on several popular series for Recorded Books. Among these are the Mrs. Pollifax books by Dorothy Gillman and the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. Ms. Peters is a tremendous fan of Ms. Rosenblat’s audio performances and strives to create new vocal challenges for her in each book. But Barbara Rosenblat is always up to the challenge. One listener to write that she simply could not believe that only one narrator could create so many distinct voices. The superb quality of her narrations has earned her nine of Audiofile’s prestigious GoldenEarphone awards for excellence in audio performances.
In addition to narrating for Recorded Books, Ms. Rosenblat spent nearly two years on Broadway, where she created the role of Mrs. Medlock in the Tony award winning musical The Secret Garden. The recording industry publication Billboard magazine has said, “Among devoted audiobook fans, Recorded Books reader Barbara Rosenblat is spoken of with the same affection and reverence that the music industry reserves for Frank Sinatra and the Beatles.”
Average Narrator Rating:
(See Reviews Below.)
Here are some of the things others have said about Barbara Rosenblat and the books narrated by Barbara Rosenblat :
“Barbara Rosenblat, the quintessential Mrs. Pollifax, has the perfect voice.”

Amanda Quick strikes again! I enjoyed this light story, although it follows the standard Amanda Quick plot. - Reviewer from NH
My first Mrs. Pollifax and I'm HOOKED!!!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Mrs. Pollifax, Innocent Tourist)
I really enjoyed both the novel (my first Mrs. Pollifax book) as well as the performance of the reader (Barbara Rosenblat). The characters are fun and beleivable and there are enough plot twists to keep things interesting. The performance of Barbara Rosenblat is superb. I have listened to other audio books where the reader does just that, they simply read the book in a deadpan style, but Ms. Rosenblat voice-acts her way through the book and thus brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book! - Reviewer from Texas, USA
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Blood Lure)
If one were reading the book, one would have to admit that this is truly a page turner. Some parts got a tad bit boring, but overall, it was good listening. Who would have ever thought a park rangers job was this intense! - Reviewer from Cali
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Vendetta Defense)
Welcome to a cast of characters who will do more than having you laughing yourself silly. This story climbs the ladder of what a VENDETTA is all about and how tradition and family values can eventually push a man beyond his limit. Lisa Scottoline kept within an interesting defense, and Barbara Rosenblat is, as always, enjoyable. - Reviewer from Cali
LETHAL
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Dangerous Kiss)
Jackie Collins has once again added the glitz and glamour to murder. The charcters, male and female alike, are all stunning individuals who keep you wanting more of their lives. As narrator, Rosenblat lifts the words from the pages and makes you feel every bit of this story. - Reviewer from Cali
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Affair)
Cute little romance with some comedic moments. Not much to say about this story that is any different than any other romance. The basic ending is that boy and girl get together and be a happy couple with a little murder in between to keep them busy. - Reviewer from
Accept No Substitutes
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Falcon at the Portal)
The author says that she only listens to Barbara Rosenblat?s performances of her books. The author is a wise woman. I have heard another audio version of Falcon, and it simply can?t compare. Rosenblat really makes this book come alive. It is one of the more poignant and melodramatic chapters in the history of the Emersons. Rosenblat handles the large cast of characters with great skill and understanding. This is a must for all Amelia Peabody fans (especially we poor helpless creatures whose hearts belong to Ramses!) - Reviewer from Virginia
One of Her Best
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating He Shall Thunder in the Sky)
The 12th episode in the Amelia Peabody series provides plenty of suspense, humor, local color and historical detail, and the usual cast of eccentric characters readers expect. The tone of the book is darker than earlier episodes, in keeping with the setting in 1915, at the beginning of World War I. Ramses accepts a dangerous and secret military assignment that forces his parents to see him as an adult and admit how much they love him. Nefret curbs her impetuous nature and comes to her senses, as fans of the series hoped she would. Sethos returns and leaves his mark on the Emerson family in an unexpected way. Ramses and his Egyptian friend David are impossibly brave and clever, but it?s all in keeping with how their characters developed over the years, and who wants brutal reality and an unhappy ending? There?s enough family history included so that new readers will be able to get up to speed easily, although I recommend reading Falcon at the Portal first. This book made me hope Peters keeps writing until she?s 90. Barbara Rosenblat handles a large cast of characters, accents and emotions brilliantly. I read the book twice before listening to the tape and I still couldn?t turn it off. - Reviewer from Virginia
A fine mix of mystery, archaeology and confounded young lovers
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Ape Who Guards the Balance)
This is the second book in an internal quartet that focuses on the younger members of the Emerson clan. Ramses, David and Nefret have become a formidable trio of detectives, much to the chagrin of Amelia and Emerson who still think of them as dear obedient children. Ramses suffers silently for love of his foster sister Nefret, who remains totally oblivious to his devotion. The action starts early with Amelia and Ramses marching in a London suffragist?s parade that serves as cover for the daring Master Criminal and triggers the murderous wrath of Amelia?s most implacable enemy. The plot is revealed with tantalizing cleverness and daring escapes from knife-wielding villains as the family bands together to discover who is behind the series of traps laid for them after they return to Egypt. Archaeology returns to prominence through the Emerson?s involvement in the botched excavation of KV-55 by real-life Theodore Davis. An old friend says farewell and a new romance blossoms. It?s all told with Peter?s trademark humor and affection for her characters. There aren?t enough superlatives for Barbara Rosenblat?s abilities as a narrator so I?ll just say she adds value to every book she honors with her performance. - Reviewer from Northern Virginia
A terrific performance!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Suspicion of Malice)
I enjoy all the Barbara Parker/Gail Connor books and have heard others in unabridged audio. The performance by Barbara Rosenblatt gives Anthony Quintana an entirely new dimension. Her portrayal of an educated, upscale, sensitive, stubborn, proud Cuban-American is exceptional! I see the character completely differently now. I don’t know if this belongs in this review but Barbara Rosenblatt also amazed me in A TANGLED WEB where there were many dialects, but most impressive was being able to differentiate (as the listener) two twins that swapped identities. I listen to 40 Unabridged audiobooks a year (drive a lot) and will choose a book merely because Barbara Rosenblatt does it! - Reviewer from Las Vegas and Corpus Christi (commute)
Oldie but Goodie
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax)
This book was written in 1966, yet despite the dated (the spies are still fighting the Russian and the Red Chinese), it was a great fun spy novel. Plus, its one of a series so if you like it, there are more to listen too. - Reviewer from
Listening to this tape made me very hungry...
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Catering to Nobody)
When this book first came out I rented from the neighborhood library. But, since I am a very busy person I did not have time to read very much of it before I had to send it back to the library. When I heard from a friend that the book was being turned into an audiobook as well as already being a hardcopy, I jumped in my car and went to the store and bought it. I have had it for about a month now and have already listened to it about 15 times. I really love Mrs. Davidson work and I hope that she keeps writing these great books. - Reviewer from USA
Regency fans - dont miss this one!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Affair)
This is one of my favorite of Amanda Quick’s (Jayne Ann Krentz) books. Barbara Rosenblat is my favorite female narrator and makes it easy to tell who is speaking. I have listened to the story several times and enjoyed it again and again.

Wonderful listening!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Bridget Jones’s Diary)
Hilarious book -- and especially suited for a narrated performance. I recommend this for anyone starting out as a listener. The short diary entries are easy to follow, it is laugh-out-loud funny, so much so that I was afraid I would drive up onto the sidewalk. Barbara Rosenblat is just incomparable. The pacing, the voices, the attitude --all perfect. - Reviewer from California
My favorite mystery series of all.
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Crocodile on the Sandbank)
This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody mystery series, which is my favorite series of all (and I read a lot of books). Im very torn about what to say in a review. I want to tell you so much, and at the same time I dont want to spoil the surprises for you. The time is the Victorian Era, the setting is Egypt. The author actually has a doctorate in Egyptology from a highly respected American university, so she knows what she is talking about as far as Egyptian archeology. The archeological sites in each book are real and accurate. The real archeologists of that time period are minor characters in the books. This is a series in which the character actually ages over the length of the series. She is in her early thirties in the first book and in her sixties in the penultimate one. Amelia Peabody is both remarkable and humorous. And the series gets better as it goes along. I think my favorite of the series is the eleventh book, so if you like this book even a little, keep going!
Id also like to comment on Barbara Rosenblatts narration. That woman is a genius! She has a different voice for every major character; you seldom or never have any question about who is talking. I cant figure out how those male voices can come out of the same mouth that does children and women so well. And even more interesting is how the voices change as they age. There is one character who first appears as a child and by the end of the series is an adult, and his voice changes book by book from a little child to an older one to a teenager and finally an adult while at the same time being recognizably the same character throughout. I have no idea how she does it, but its marvelous. Try this series; youll like it. - Reviewer from Somewhere in Darkest Utah
A perfect match between Author and Narrator!!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Crocodile on the Sandbank)
I have never heard such a perfect match between an author and her narrator. Barbara Rosenblat is the PERFECT Amelia Peabody, not to mention the perfect Emerson, Walter, Evelyn and Lord Ellsmere! I have loved Elizabeth Peters Peabody series for years and now to experience it in a different way has doubled my enjoyment! You can be sure I will listen to every Barbara Rosenblat rendition of Amelia Peabody, from book 1 to book 500 (one can only hope!). - Reviewer from Staten Island, New York
Excellent Book, Skillfully Read
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Hard Truth)
Ive long been a fan of Nevada Barr, but this is the first of her books that Ive listened to rather than read. Ms. Rosenblat added a whole new dimension to Ms. Barrs excellent writing. Her voice was captivating, changing noticably with for each character, full of emotion, and always clearly encunciated. The book itself was riveting and had me in its spell within the first five minutes of listening. Highly recommended!! - Reviewer from California
WWII/Jewish historical fiction with a twist
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Devil’s Arithmetic)
Jane Yolen (as always) manages to handle an extremely difficult period in history with dignity and compelling twists of tale. Both of her books that Ive read- Briar Rose and The Devils Arithmetic - are superb, and even though they are marketed for young adults, I think that they will enthrall adult readers too. She manages to weave pieces of fantasy in with reality so well that the plot continually twists and shifts. Both books left me wondering until the end, and then I simply shook my head in awe as all of the storylines came together and all was revealed. - Reviewer from Harmony, PA, USA
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Bone Vault)
Excellent place and character development. The back story about the origins of the Museum of Natural History and the perceived difference in status between it and the Metropolitan Museum of Art served as the foundation for the intrigue. - Reviewer from
In my mind I was there
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Ill Wind)
Nevada Barr takes us to Mesa Verde in Colorado. I have been there and her story and Ms. Rosenblats narration took my mind there, the picture was perfect. The suspence was great. I love a story that does not allow me to know or guess who the murderer is until the very end. My 4th Nevada Barr and cant wait for the next one. - Reviewer from Colorado
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Entombed)
Without a doubt one of the most intriguing, as well as informative.. mystery books I have ever read! And I am a fan! Fairsteins combination of literary facts entwined with chilling danger makes this book a winner. Barbara Rosenblat again is unsurpassed with her reading skills and extraordinary voice interpretations. EXCELLENT! Mary - Reviewer from Texas
Philadelphia Lawyer Solves Internment Camp Mystery
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Killer Smile)
This is a terrific read - with punchy dialogue, compelling characters, a delightful flavor of a south Philadelphia Italian family, and a plot that becomes more compelling with each passing chapter. The reader is excellent - one of our favorites. Lisa Scottoline delivers again. - Reviewer from Philadelphia
The Best Ever
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Flashback)
I have listened to every Nevada Barr book and although I loved each one of the other books, Flash Back is my favorite. She was able to blend the mystery of the National Park today with an equally thought provoking mystery from the 1800s. I want more. - Reviewer from Colorado Springs, Co
Well handled all around
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Flirting With Pete)
Sometimes I have trouble with books which jump between past and present events. . . but this one did it extremely well. The characters were well-drawn and likable and came alive under the narrators skillful reading. Overall a very enjoyable read. - Reviewer from California

(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Night Drifter)
Combines romance, fantasy, and Arthurian Legend to make a great book. I had a hard time turning off the tape player. Barbaras British accent made the story come alive. - Reviewer from Peachtree City GA

Likely to Die--another hit!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Likely To Die)
Linda Fairstein’s novels starring Alexandra Cooper are suspenseful and intelligent. The characters feel "real" and develop more with each story in the series. Not having read any of Ms Fairstein’s books, I intend to continue the series via Recorded Books. As always, Barbara Rosenblat’s reading enhances the enjoyment!

Delightful
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax)
What a breath of fresh air this book is!! Mrs. Pollifax is a senior citizen set on doing something for her country- to that end, she announces that she wishes to be a spy for the US. This book is funny and endearing- the characters are loveable. While it is true that the story is dated with references to the Iron Curtain and such, it manages to transcend that weight and carry the reader ona very interesting journey. The book is fairly short, but very sweet reading. Thoroughly enjoyable and nice to know that there are many more in the series. - Reviewer from New Orleans

McNaught Delivers a Refreshing Alternative
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Someone To Watch Over Me)
Judith McNaughts "Someone to Watch over Me" is a refreshing alternative from the trendy, blood and guts stories most novelists of mysteries are putting out today. In the last few years, it seems that with each book I read, the "bad guy" is getting so vile that I dont want to hear any more gory details. McNaught delivers us from that and give us a crisp murder mystery entwined with not one, but two, sizzling romances. Barbara Rosenblat is, of course, the consumant narrator, and gives us a wonderful reading. However, some of her male voices are so low that the book is difficult to listen to while driving on the highway--one will be turning the volumn up and down quite frequently. Listening to the book while driving in town, where ther is not so much road noise, will pose no problem. All in all, it was a wonderful read. - Reviewer from San Angelo, Texas
Another scrumptious offering
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Catering to Nobody)
I have listened to the Diane Mott Davidson books out of chronological order, but enjoyed this look at the meeting of Goldie and Tom. The narrator does such a great job of catching the humorous overtones in the novel. I enjoyed this one very much - Reviewer from Memphis

Great storytelling thats even better HEARD, not just read!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Ballad of Frankie Silver)
Sharyn McCrumb’s Ballad Novels are based on the mountain ballads sung in the Tennessee hills where her characters live; that oral tradition really comes alive when told aloud, as here, with great narration. The readers do a majestic job of telling both stories - the present day one, and the sad tale of Frankie Silver that resonates in the present. Be sure to stay tuned for the interview with McCrumb, on the last cd - its very interesting, and shows how well-researched her books are. Terrific book!

Pleasant Surprise
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Houses of Stone)
Being an Elizabeth Peters fan, a friend turned me onto her other nom de plum, Barbara Michaels. "Houses of Stone" is the first Michaels book I’ve listened to, and I liked it very much. Well crafted story, characters that have true dimension, and enough intrique and suspense to keep me pleasantly apprehensive at times. A couple little loose ends (the amorphous scream in the woods) that werent sewn up didnt detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. As for Ms. Rosenblatt’s reading, I’ll admit I’m hopelessly smitten with her ability to bring a book to life.

Engrossing, Entertaining Story Sweeps You Away
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Prodigal Daughter)
Well done. That’s it in a nutshell, as they say. This family saga is incredibly compelling, with the narrator leading you deeper and deeper into the family’s story. Characters are extremely well drawn, and the tale is full of satisfying developments. Not all is sweetness and light, which makes it more interesting. Very timely today, considering the candidacy of a woman for president!

My First AudioBook. WOW!
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating Sweet Revenge)
I had read all of Diane Mott Davidson’s books and I was looking forward to her new one. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to read it. So, I gave the recorded version a try and now I am hooked on all audio books done by Barbara Rosenblat. This book alone is great because it brings back one of the characters from a previous book, and even though you know that character is real, you still have a doubt. I liked the ending. Some might not simply because the book didn’t completely end. Barbara Rosenblat’s narrating makes this book more than a 5 star book. I’ve since read the book and as I am reading any other Davidson book, I hear Rosenblat’s voice as the character. If you enjoy Rosenblat, give Elizabeth Peters a try.

Great performance of a masterful book
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating The Ballad of Frankie Silver)
This is one of the best audio books I have ever listened to. I read the book after listening to it, and while it is by far the best of the ballad series, the audio performance added so much to the narrative that it improved it immeasurably. A really enjoyable experience! - Reviewer from Eaton, Colorado
not one of Ms. Quick’s best
(Review of Barbara Rosenblat narrating I Thee Wed)
Generally, I am a HUGE fan of Amanda Quick. She introduced me to the world of historical romances and continues to be my favorite author. However, I found this book to be far less intriguing than the others I have listened to on tape or read myself, and found my attention to the book wandering. The characters were enjoyable, as always, and the story grabbed me immediately, but I eventually found it slow going and was disappointed in the amount of romance between the two main characters. They were most definitely attracted to one another, but there was so little intimacy that I continually found myself hoping they’d discard their misconceptions of the others emotions and be honest with one another. However, Barbara Rosenblat, as always, does a remarkable job narrating. Her continuous ability to create a distinct voice for all the different characters amazes me and makes her stories a delight to listen to. With other narrators, I sometimes find it difficult to differentiate some of the characters, but that is never the case with Ms. Rosenblat. Not only is it obviously helpful to be able to do so, but the voice she decides to use helps me get an idea of the characteristics of the individual shes bringing to life. She hasn’t disappointed me yet. - Reviewer from Bradenton, FL
