For years, critics have hailed Patrick O’Brian’s seafaring adventure series. The New York Times calls O’Brian’s books “the best historical novels ever written.” With elegant language, eccentric characters, and authentic period atmosphere, the series transports you back to the high seas of the Napoleonic Era. Its heroes—blustery Captain Jack Aubrey and dreamy Dr. Stephen Maturin—come breathtakingly alive under Patrick Tull’s robust narration.
No other narrator can touch Tull’s ability to capture the rich humor and high seas adventure that O’Brian fans love so much. Universally hailed for his “rich and unforgettable performances ” (AudioFile) and “fine narrative style ” (Midwest Book Review), Tull won the admiration of listeners and critics across the nation. “Fans of O’Brian’s work who really want to get onto the ship and go for a ride,” writes Kliatt, “will want to hear Patrick Tull.”
Tull’s deep, rumbling bass has swept listeners back to the storm-tossed seas and gallant navy warships of O’Brian’s brilliantly imagined world. Kliatt raves that through Tull’s narration, “the listener can almost hear the wind in the rigging and feel the rolling deck.” Listen to any book in this classic series, and we know you’ll agree.
Patrick Tull also narrated two other popular series. Just as he became the voices for the O’Brian seafarers, Tull created one masterful performance after another for the works of Ellis Peters and John Mortimer. In the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael, Patrick Tull became a medieval herbalist and monk whose retirement was interrupted by perplexing mysteries. In the cases of Horace Rumpole, Tull captured the eccentric, eloquent barrister to perfection.
Look for Patrick Tull’s narrations in these three riveting series, and in any of the seven dozen books he performed for Recorded Books.

Haunting, both for the listener and the characters
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating The Breaking Wave)
I listened to this book several years ago and I’m still thinking about it. It’s the best of Shute’s numerous excellent WWII novels, even though much of the action takes place years later. This book helped me to understand better than any other the passion experienced by the young people who fought the war. - Reviewer from Baltimore, MD
Third Time is Even More Charming
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating Treason’s Harbour)
This series is the only one I have ’read’ more than once and the more I listen to Patrick Tull the more amazed and delighted I am by his masterful recreations of Aubrey, Maturin and the other regular characters. As I work all alone on a Sunday night I am kept from feeling the crushing boredom of filing and the isolation of working off-hours alone high above the city by Tull’s outstanding, constant and seamless renderings of the accents and moods of O’Brian’s characters. Both Patricks have made me laugh, cry and actually feel the glory of battles and the cruel agony of defeats. Thank you Recorded Books for your fine narrators and great quality tapes and recordings. God bless Patrick O’Brian for writing the series and thank God to Patrick Tull for narrating them - he’s as good as any movie or play and it’s all done through only the spoken word and my imagination! - Reviewer from Chicago, Illinois
Captain Aubrey finds himself headed beyond the cape commanding a squadron
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating The Mauritius Command)
Once again Patrick Tull creates a cast of characters through the power of his voice. The well-bred, the cockney, the North Country landsman, as well as others are represented in a stirring tale of adventure, brotherhood, and courage. The listener is transported to the world of canvas, cordage, gun powder, and howling seas - all through the magic of Patrick O’ Brian’s prose. - Reviewer from Minnesota
Homer and O'Brian
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating The Wine-Dark Sea)
The title obviously derives from Homer and gives me a chance to include Homer, O’Brian and Shakespeare all in the same sentence and O’Brian deserves to be in such company. He is a genius. I love the opening sequence in this volume which give the book its name. How O’Brian keeps inventing such twists is astounding. Stephen goes up in the Andes and Tull’s masterful reading of this really emphasizes Stephen. It almost changes the fulcrum of the books from Jack to Steve and I very much like it. I give him joy of his accomplishment! - Reviewer from Winter Park, Florida
The stories are exhilarating, the narration is exceptional!
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating Master and Commander)
The publisher’s comments regarding Patrick O’Brian say more than I could. He’s a great author, no doubt, and will be missed. The narration of this series is what makes this the spectacular collection that it is. Patrick Tulls narration of this series is truly amazing. Im a big fan of recorded books and have listened to many "readers", but Mr. Tull is no reader. The man must have multiple personality disorder. Every character has a unique identity. Each has its own pitch, cadence and accent. Even the breathing of the characters differs. This series is available in various formats from various sources, featuring other narrators. Some offer samples that can be downloaded. (Hint to Recorded Books.) Try them. They’re not bad, but they’re definitely not Patrick Tull. - Reviewer from Phoenix, Arizona
Im on my second pass through the POB series, and I have to say that this is the best book of an excellent set.
The battles between the British and American ships are wildly exciting, and poor Jack and Stephens various tribulations bring out the best in them.
Of course Patrick Tull is magnificent as always in his reading. - Reviewer from Austin, Texas, USA
A MUST INTRODUCTION TO PATRICK O’BRIAN
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating Master and Commander)
I read the entire series, twice. I discovered O’Brian while on a trip in 1986 and thus I came under the spell of one of the best writers of the past century. A rare wordsmith, lacking in today’s writers, O’Brian takes the best of Jane Austen, Horatio Hornblower and all the adventure and mystery writers and produces a series that captivates the reader. The research is evident in the details that captivate the reader. Thinking I was thoroughly schooled in the series, I happened on the Patrick Tull CD reading of Master and Commander and found nuances missed in my readings. The depth of the books compelled me to follow up with more of the audio series and I have not found myself disappointed.
- Reviewer from Alaska
Jack and Stephen manage an entire novel without a ship wreck.
This novel has slighty more focus on Stephen than Jack, which suits me fine as I am a huge fan of The Doctor.
Its fun to watch Jack and Stephen get their replacement ship The Nutmeg ready for sea, and we grieve as it is now Stephens turn to suffer an economic setback.
Patrick Tull provides yet another outstanding performance. How one man can perform so many different characters and accents defies belief.
I wish you joy of listening to this book! - Reviewer from
Excellent Author; Excellent Reader
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating Master and Commander)
I was not aware of Patrick OBrians books until the movie came out last year. I enjoyed the movie, but the book was better. (How often have you said that?) Patrick Tull did an excellent job with the performance. I have been a fan of the Horatio Hornblower books since I was a teenager, but I suspect Im going to like this series even better. These books have the same heroics as the Hornblower books, but they also have a great deal of humor, and frankly, all the people in this book were much more human than those in the Hornblower books. - Reviewer from Somewhere in Darkest Utah
Patrick Tull is the perfect narrator for Maturin and Aubrey.
(Review of Patrick Tull narrating Post Captain)
Take the time to track down the Patrick Tull narration. Other versions are available, but none can compare to Tulls spectacular renditions. - Reviewer from
If you have enjoyed Ellis Peters with Patrick Tull’s excellent voice telling the story, you will surely enjoy this wonderful book. A tale filled with mystery, excitement, and a marvelous surprise ending for the listener and Brother Cadfael. Dont miss this important chapter in the Cadfael chronicles.
- Reviewer from Northern Minnesota woods
One of Ellis Peters’ most humorous stories. Excellent characters, yearning for their very own "saint", seek to import one who they feel has been neglected in her own country. Patrick Tull’s reading of this marvelous, all-too-human story of aspiration and adoration becomes a real classic. - Reviewer from northern Minnesota
