Description
Reesa McMahon’s Yankee family already sticks out in 1951 central Florida. Then Marvin Cully, a young black citrus picker who works for Reesa’s father, is killed--clues link the crime to the local Opalakee Klan. Reesa’s father, knowing the local police are too corrupt to be any help, calls in the FBI. As her home becomes the center of a revolution, Reesa becomes aware of the bigotry and hatred surrounding the supposedly proper Southern town.

McCarthy offers an evocative ... picture of the racist South at the start of the civil rights movement.-Publishers Weekly
