Life is wonderful on a pretty island in the Antilles-until the seven-headed Bird of Darkness comes from behind the horizon to turn noon into midnight with its terrible black wings! The Bird of Darkness only leaves the kingdom in peace when the beautiful Princess Marie lets it take her away as its prisoner. Brave, clever Soliday decides to rescue the princess. But Salacota, his mean-spirited, cowardly twin brother, has some greedy plans of his own.

"Princess Marie sacrifices herself to the evil Bird of Darkness; when Soliday hears this, he vows to rescue her. But it is his cowardly twin who rescues the princess, leaving Soliday to perish. Robin Miles brings a jaunty Caribbean tone to the story, while giving each character a distinct voice made unique by tone and personality traits. Miles uses her pacing and tone to build the tension in a story in which you know (or hope you know) what will happen. A good folktale, with a hint of violence, for younger readers also contains multiple layers for older readers. However, a good picture book without the pictures loses something. For a truly memorable reading experience, get the book with the audio. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine"
