The Lost Pianos of Siberia is sweeping history of the region and of music in Russia, told within the framework of one journalist's remarkable quest for a storied Siberian piano. From the 1700s when Catherine the Great embraced pianos as a means toward westernization, the book recounts how the production of pianos moved progressively eastwards to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Soon, pianos had begun to journey into Siberia, often inextricably tied to the penal colonies that formed the basis of life in this hostile landscape. The Russian Revolution scattered many of the aristocratic instruments in the region, but also introduced new pianos and traditions. Roberts interacts directly with the history she reports as she moves through the region encountering instruments linked to the Imperial Russian penal system and the Soviet Gulags, and contending with the dark past of the region. Part travelogue, but largely a story of pianos past and present in this fascinating place, the book follows Roberts as she tracks a number of different instruments to find one whose history is definitively Siberian. Her journey reveals a desolate land inhabited by wild tigers and bears, yet one that is also profoundly beautiful—and peppered with pianos. This is a meandering adventure, driven by a very abstract creative notion, but ultimately Roberts finds what she seeks.
