Description

At her aunt and uncle's farm in the summer of 1958, 12-year-old Dawn and her new friend Charlotte create their own private world: Planet Kid. Away from whiny brothers and nosy neighbor boys, they pass one carefree day after another. But as dark secrets from the adult world creep into Planet Kid, Dawn must make some tough choices-choices that could mean life or death for her friend. In this moving, insightful novel, Newbery Honor author Jane Leslie Conly captures both the innocent simplicity and the haunting complexity of growing up.

Professional reviews

"As Dawn spends the summer of 1958 with relatives on a Virginia farm, she tries to practice her curveball, think positively about her mother's illness, and play with her new friends, Charlotte and Delbert. At age 12 Dawn is confused about boys, her family, and the extreme physical "discipline" at Charlotte's house. Kate Forbes gives a capable performance of this finely crafted book. She brings out a wide range of emotions and is especially effective in the more suspenseful moments. Her narration gives Dawn a youthful yet articulate voice. J.M.P.
