Tengo and Frikkie grow up playing together on the South African grassland. There the two boys-one black and one white-also work side-by-side on the farm Frikkie will inherit. Each day, Frikkie thinks about when the farm will be his, and how Tengo will be his boss-boy. But Tengo has other ideas. As the boys grow into young adults, their worlds shift. A severe drought threatens the farm. Violence erupts in Johannesburg, and Tengo and Frikkie get trapped in the turmoil of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement. Finding themselves on opposing sides of the conflict, they wonder if their interracial friendship can survive. Or will the monumental change taking place in their beloved country separate them forever? Narrator Lisette Lecat's native South African accent lends itself perfectly to this story. She leads listeners from the placid landscape of the African veld into the raucous din of Johannesburg's streets, and brings understanding to the cross-cultural issues author Sheila Gordon writes about.
