"When Las Vegas casino bodyguard Tanner Green falls on Jessy Sparhawk with a knife in his back while she's playing cards, PI Dillon Wolf comes to her rescue. Fred Stella and Tanya Sirois alternate reading the story's male and female parts, drawing the listener into this paranormal romance. Stella's pacing is careful as he switches from Western flat vowels to the East Coast accent of a gangster while following the twisted path to the killer. Sirois delivers the female parts, portraying women who face danger in every scene. Sparhawk, who is a Lakota Sioux, and Wolf, who is part Paiute, are "nightwalkers," those who see ghosts. Ultimately, the expressive voices of the two actors fade into the background as the story takes the fore and the characters call upon the spirits to find the killer. M.B.K.
