The year is 1944. Josh's beloved father, Frank Arnold, goes off to join the navy. Josh and his wilting Southern-belle mother, Miss Anne, go off to New Mexico. Miss Anne and her permanent houseguest, Jimbob Buel, tipple sherry, play bridge, and wilt some more. Josh, meanwhile, comes resoundingly of age.
