"For millennia throughout the five galaxies, more advanced races have "uplifted" promising candidate races into sentience through genetic engineering. Humans, however, uplifted themselves before encountering the aliens, and then began uplifting chimpanzees and dolphins all by themselves. This annoyed some of the lordly ancient races, particularly a birdlike species that began to play nasty tricks on a human outpost called Garth. George Wilson's comfortable reading style does not neglect emotion as these epic scenes shift back and forth among characters. The story moves nicely along, and Wilson neither overdoes alien intonations, nor pretends that they're not there. The listener's entire attention is warmly captured. D.R.W.
