Professional reviews

"Ostler's short book tackles a big subject: one of the longest and largest land disputes in American history--the Lakota Indian claim to South Dakota's Black Hills. Ostler attempts to be evenhanded--a novel approach to describing a dispute that has generated outrage on all sides for at least a century and a half. As if to match Ostler's attempts at objectivity, George Wilson--generally an excellent narrator--delivers this account in a slow monotone. Still, the narration is clear and easy to follow, and Wilson's mispronunciation of a few legal terms will bother only lawyers. Overall, this is a good introduction to an important dispute. F.C.
