Caleb Carr's penchant for blending history with rich storytelling propelled him to the #1 spot on the New York Times best-seller list. Here Carr weaves a genre-bending saga that follows the fortunes of Broken, a wealthy fortress city where clashing steel decides who reigns. While Sixt Arnem, leader of the king's army, prepares for war, powerful merchant Lord Baster-kin hatches his own devious plot. Outside Broken, a group of exiles known as the Bane, led by the female tracker Keera and the philosopher Caliphestros, strive to breach the city walls.

Professional reviews

"Narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds takes a low-key yet engaging approach to this alternate-history story of two rival groups in medieval Germany who blame each other, and their gods, for a mysterious and deadly plague. Reynolds wisely avoids accents, instead concentrating on distinct voices, which help listeners keep track of the many characters, human and otherwise. The novel is punctuated with fictional letters between Edward Gibbon and Edmund Burke, read by George Guidall, and capped by dozens of informative endnotes, read by John Curless. Despite the fine performances of the narrators, the novel is ill suited to audio because listeners cannot easily access the details in Curless's endnotes at the relevant points in the long story.
