In "Silvermane" two Mormon mustangers attempt to capture a wild stallion in the Sevier range country. "Tappan's Burro" tells of the life of a desert prospector and his burro, Jenet, who guides him across the treacherous floor of Death Valley. In "Canyon Walls", outlaw Smoke Bellew finds employment as a ranch hand working for a dowager Mormon, makes the ranch a financial sucess, and falls in love with the wanton Rebecca-but's it's too good to last. In "From Missouri" a schoolteacher from the East arrives in Arizona Territory despite discouragement from the three cowhands. But when she arrives, they find she is not the middle-aged matron they had expected-and the lecherous Beady Jones has his own idea of how to introduce her to the West.
