Description

On the busiest shopping day of the year, idealistic college students wade into the throngs in malls across America to carry out an elaborate media stunt. They're carrying concealed devices they believe will disrupt store's computer systems, causing chaos at the checkouts. But at the nation's largest shopping center, the results are incendiary - and people lie dead. A white-collar lobby group called Citizens for American Pride takes responsibility for the protest action, calling for an end to cheap, foreign-made goods and exported manufacturing jobs. But they insist the bombing was the work of rogue members, zealots who took CAP's protectionist message too far. As Maggie and her partner, Special Agent R. J. Tully, sift through both the debris and the facts of the case, they uncover the disturbing truth beneath CAP's respectable veneer: paranoia, racism and a sinister secret agenda that extends to the organization's highest ranks-all wrapped in the flag...and ready to make an even bigger "statement." As retailers countdown to Christmas Eve, Maggie knows that infiltration is the only option, even though the cost to her personally could be huge. And if they fail, more innocent shoppers will pay with their lives.

Professional reviews

"When a bomb goes off in a public place on the year's biggest shopping day, federal and state teams spring to action. This tightly spun story of Agent Maggie O'Dell's investigation gives new meaning to the question: Whodunit? As O'Dell scrambles to find the mastermind, the clock ticks on a second bomb. Tanya Eby's narration is passable. Her best voice is an overly enunciated minor character, a woman who assists in the investigation. But more variation among the investigators who are trying to close in on the elusive bomber would be helpful. Still, the latest in the O'Dell series maintains a suspenseful tone. M.B.
