Description

New Orleans, 1838. When Benjamin January suddenly finds that his services playing piano at extravagant balls held by the city's wealthy are no longer required, he ends up agreeing to accompany sugar planter Henri Viellard and his young wife, Chloe, on a mission to Washington to find a missing friend. Plunged into a murky world, it soon becomes clear that while it is very possible the Viellards' friend is dead, his enemies are very much alive - and ready to kill anyone who gets in their way.

Professional reviews

"Barbara HamblyÕs twelfth Benjamin January novel starts out in New Orleans in 1838. Kirsten PotterÕs performance highlights HamblyÕs meticulous historical research and gives immediacy to the period details. January, a free man of color who is a trained surgeon and a musician, loses his job after he helps a dying Òfighting slave.Ó To feed his family, January agrees to help planter Henri Viellard find a missing friend. Potter handles the horrors and brutality of a world of grave robbers and slave stealers with understated intensity. She gives the well-drawn characters individual personalities, including a young Edgar Allan Poe and Ganymede Tyler, the Ògood man FridayÓ of the title. JanuaryÕs experiences are fraught with violence, ferocity, and peril, and Potter makes them all feel real. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine"
