The differing facets of H. P. Lovecrafts strange world where science fiction is laced with horror and fantasy is no more strikingly evoked than in this collection of some of his most popular shorter stories. There are three main works here. The first, The Thing on the Doorstep, accounts the background behind a murder and transferable personalities. The second, The Dreams in the Witch House, explores premature death, which is experienced by inhabitants of a room that previously harboured a witch from Salem. Both date from 1933 and are part of the Cthulhu Mythos genre. The third main story is The Colour Out Of Space (1927), which relates the effect on the local population and vegetation when a meteorite crashes to earth.

by H.P. Lovecraft
"Narrator William Roberts evokes just the right amount of tension and terror to reflect the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft. Roberts delivers these stories in a subtly coarse voice that is well suited to horror, keeping listeners solidly engaged. Throughout the macabre tales, Roberts captures charactersÕ voices expertlyÑfrom DerbyÕs maniacal ravings in ÒThe Thing on the DoorstepÓ to the narratorÕs downward-spiraling lucidity in ÒThe Rats in the Walls.Ó The scurrying sounds of rodents add further ambiance to the latter story. During scenes of heightened excitement Roberts speaks with energy, and when depicting sinister settings, his low, even tone that fills the listener with trepidation. This chilling listen is best enjoyed after dark. A.K.M. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine"
