Experiencing a passionate response to many recent events, Nussbaum felt compelled to expand her viral 2017 article "Why Some Men Are Above the Law" into a book about the broader issues at work in society and law as we continue to reckon with experiences and issues surrounding sexual harassment. Of course much has, and will continue to be, written about sexual violence and sexual harassment in the United States, but Martha offers a unique point of view no matter the subject. You'll see from her pages that this will not be an abstract work (although you can hardly take the philosopher out of her) but one grounded firmly in politics and the law, and to a certain extent in psychology. Martha begins it quite personally, then moves on to trace the sea change in attitude and law toward harassment and abuse (two different notions, two different movements) that began in the 1970s and has now given rise to the #MeToo moment. The original warriors were working-class women and second-wave feminist attorneys (both women and men); slowly, the voices of men who were assaulted and harassed joined the outcry. Now both women and men who can readily command the spotlight have gone public too, and they are directly challenging the impunity of powerful men. Martha digs into the worlds of some of these powerful men, in particular the arenas of entertainment, sports, and politics--for example, high-profile abusers like Bill Cosby and the quarterback Jameis Winston--to analyze why they think they can get away with assault and harassment, and why they often do. Martha C. Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, appointed in Law, Philosophy, and Divinity.
